Recently, Rick Squires emailed me a simple letter, complimenting the Shock Treatment Network. In the letter, he briefly explained how he fell in love with Shock Treatment, and even got his daughter, Hannah, hooked on it. I have to be honest: the letter moved me. Here's part of that email...
In the past 3 weeks, my daughter and I have become fanatical Shock Treatment fans! I bought the original record album back in '82, but never saw the film until the DVD came out. Now I watch it over and over again!Over the next few emails, he shared his passion for the film even more, and I asked him and his daughter to be the site's VERY FIRST male and female Mental Health Winner--and our first father/daughter one too! He was thrilled, and emailed me back with a bio. Here's that email...
Attached is the photo I promised of my daughter and myself. And below is a brief blurb about how we came to be Shock Treatment addicts!
Please let me know if you need anything else from us. This is all so very exciting!
Way back in 1975, I went to a double feature at my local theater: Myra Breckinridge and a new film – just released the week before – The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I sat there that afternoon with an audience of perhaps 30 people, all stunned by the sights we saw on the screen. The only audience participation at that point for RHPS was our laughter as we watched this ground-breaking film!
In 1981, I heard that a ‘sequel’ of sorts had been made, titled Shock Treatment. Though I was unable to catch it on any local screen, I was lucky enough to find the vinyl LP of the soundtrack. This I became addicted to!
Now, cut to this past September. Shock Treatment has finally come out on DVD. I took my copy home to finally see what I’d missed those many years before. I watched it. Then, I watched it the next night. And the next night. AND the next night! I was hooked, big time! My daughter, Hannah, who attends college locally, laughed at me when I emailed her about having watched Shock Treatment every evening for nearly two weeks! What could be so special about this film, she wondered. I sent her a copy of the soundtrack. She became instantly addicted as I had 25 years before!
When Hannah came home for a long weekend in October, we ended up watching the DVD every night! And when she went back to school, she confessed that she missed watching it. We are, clearly, lost causes!
Hannah and I are extremely honored to be the Shock Treatment Network’s first double Mr./Ms. Mental Health! The website’s a monumental tribute to a film that brings endless hours of entertainment and fun to us all. Thanks to Donny O’Brian for the incredible amount of information and amusement at the Shock Treatment Network!
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH RICK AND HANNAH. LOVE THE PIC! IT PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE. YOU DESERVE THIS HONOR. :) DONNY O'BRYAN, OF THE SHOCK TREATMENT NETWORK.
